HVO Fuel is One of the Cleanest & Purest Fuels on the Market

Birlem Oil is a leading national supplier of HVO fuel, with many years experience providing innovative and green fuels to customers across the UK.

HVO fuel can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90%, helping your home or business to reduce its environmental footprint whilst also improving efficiency.

What is HVO Fuel?

HVO, or Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil, is a 2nd generation biofuel that’s designed to be a drop-in replacement for mineral diesel such as red diesel and Derv (white diesel). It is a massive step forward in the world of renewable fuels.

HVO Fuel combines the sustainable raw materials found in first-generation biofuels with new and innovative technologies, producing a fuel that’s not only 100% renewable but has qualities that make it far more environmentally friendly:

  • Up to 90% lower greenhouse gas emissions
  • Made from sustainable and renewable raw materials
  • Zero sulphur, fossil and FAME content – not only does it burn cleaner but it’s also better for your engines
  • Up to 10 years of storage life
  • Drop in replacement for red diesel and Derv – no need for infrastructure modification
  • Excellent cold weather performance

In the current era of environmental awareness, businesses and domestic users alike must be aware of the effect their decisions have on the climate. We’ve made the decision to begin supplying HVO Fuel nationwide as it represents a sea change in renewable fuels, and we honestly believe that the future of fuels must be both renewable and sustainable.

How is HVO produced?

HVO biofuels are made by using a hydro-processing treatment which processes fatty acids including cooking, animal fat or vegetable oil. The hydro-treatment used ensures there are high levels of purity, which leads to a reliable fuel with a long shelf life and a strong year-round performance.

Who can use HVO Fuel?

In short, almost any engine, machine or generator designed to run on red diesel or Derv should be able to use HVO Fuel without any modifications and draining the current fuel.

This is because HVO meets EN15940 standards for paraffinic fuels and Fuel Quality Directive 2009/30/EC Annex II – giving it the same combustion qualities as mineral diesel, without the environmental pitfalls.

In our experience, HVO Fuel has seen use across a range of applications – from on-road and off-road vehicles to power generation and machinery.

How is HVO Fuel different to other diesel fuels?

HVO Fuel excels in several key performance areas, containing far lower levels of impurities than fossil diesel fuels. The table below shows the differences between each main diesel variant: mineral diesel, FAME biodiesel and HVO.

Where can I buy HVO fuel?

Most HVO suppliers have to source their HVO from a third party, extending delivery times and increasing prices. Birlem Oil’s HVO Fuel is stored onsite and available for delivery within our usual timescales, cutting out the hassle of a third-party supplier and ensuring that your fuel is on its way to you as soon as possible. We also offer:

  • Deliveries from 205-36,000+ litres
  • A team of specialists dedicated to a quick and dependable service from start to end
  • 24/7 service, 365 days a year
  • Nationwide deliveries
  • Same-day and next-day emergency deliveries

What is the HVO price per litre?

The true unit cost of HVO is generally higher than regular diesel, at around 10-15% more. However, when considering diesel’s limited future and the drawbacks of other alternatives, it’s clear to see the many benefits.

Unlike electrification, there are no upfront costs to make the switch as HVO is a drop-in alternative to conventional diesel. What’s more, there’s a reduced risk of maintenance issues with a storage lifespan of up to 10 years, compared to just 1 for diesel. Therefore, when considering the short and long-term implications of switching to HVO, there are many cost benefit savings that can be gained.
