Who can use 35 second oil?

As of the 1^st April 2022, it is limited for use in certain applications, including agricultural and forestry machinery and vehicles, heating and electricity generation in non-commercial premises and passenger, freight or maintenance vehicles designed to run on rail tracks.

How is 35 second oil made?

What does 35 second oil look like?

35 second oil has a clear, bright and cherry red appearance as it has a red dye added to distinguish it from white road-going diesel.

The ‘second’ indicates a measure of hydrocarbon fuel viscosity and is articulated as the number of seconds 50ml of fuel takes to flow under controlled conditions through a set size orifice. This testing equipment is called the Redwood Viscometer.

The oil in the holding cup is heated to 40^oC. Once the conditions are correct, time is started and the oil passes through the orifice. Once through, the time is stopped and the time is recorded. The longer it takes, the ticker the oil and the higher the viscosity. Gas oil is one of the thicker oil types used in non-commercial heating appliances which can vary from 23 – 35 seconds.
